6/12 1949 Leadbelly died. American blues artist, "Leadbelly" Huddie William Ledbetter wrote many songs, including "Goodnight Irene", "Cotton Fields", "The Rock Island Line" and "The Midnight Special". Leadbelly was jailed several times for fighting and knife-related incidents, and was once jailed for shooting a man to death during an argument over a woman.
